Event Analysis & Situational Awareness
The principal goal of the WECC Event Analysis (EA) and Situational Awareness (SA) processes is to promote the reliability of the bulk power system in the Western Interconnection (WI). The EA process creates a learning opportunity for the industry. It gives insight and guidance by identifying and disseminating valuable information to owners, operators, and users of the bulk power system. The SA process includes actively monitoring BPS conditions, significant events, and emerging threats to maintain an understanding of conditions and situations that could affect the reliable operation of the BPS.

The WECC Event Analysis Process promotes a structured, consistent approach to event analysis. Through that process, WECC is developing a culture focused on reliability that encourages self-review and analysis of operations, planning, and critical infrastructure protection (CIP) processes. These event investigations can yield valuable information. At times, entities are encouraged to anonymously share what they find during these investigations, including the corrective actions they take, in the NERC Lessons Learned Process. This valuable library is on the NERC Event Analysis Page.
During event analysis, registered entities provide timely notifications to WECC and NERC of system events and disturbances. Brief reports can be submitted by clicking on the button below.
When a system event occurs, it provides learning opportunities that lead to more robust processes and reliability measures. The WECC Event Analysis (EA) team is dedicated to analyzing, learning, and sharing events that occur in the Western Interconnection to help educate and prevent future occurrences and safeguard reliability. The document below includes reports and presentations on system events. We encourage entities to review these events and look for opportunities to improve their internal practices.
Public Collection of Event Information
Lessons learned are a valuable resource enabling our industry to share solutions to problems or issues publicly. This program allows registered entities to learn from events that occur on peer systems. The creation of a lessons learned document is a collaborative effort between NERC, the WECC EA department, and the registered entities. This library of lessons learned is located on NERC’s website and covers a variety of topics. Use the links below to access the lessons learned library.
