Inverter-based Resources
This risk is part of a larger risk category associated with the carbon-to-non-carbon transition, collectively addressed in the "Grid Transformation" theme. This Risk highlights that inverter-based resources (IBR) present unique operational challenges and medium-impact risks that could affect the reliability of the Western Interconnection in the long term.
IBRs include wind turbines, solar photovoltaic, and battery energy storage systems. IBRs are facilities connected to the bulk power system that convert DC electricity from renewable sources into AC electricity, which allows power to feed into the grid. Over the next decade, entities in the West plan to add more than 100 GW of IBRs to the system to meet demand under clean- and green-energy policies.
