WECC is aware of a communication sent on August 24, 2025, from CleanCounts (formerly M-RETS) to some or all of WREGIS customers, users, and other stakeholders and the subsequent communications and other messages that CleanCounts has posted on its website and elsewhere.
CleanCounts notified us of their intent to end our contract with them in September of last year. Between September 2024 and April 2025, we spent considerable time, resources, and effort evaluating multiple paths forward for WREGIS, including whether CleanCounts might be a suitable home for the WREGIS program. We engaged outside consultants and held discussions with CleanCounts. Ultimately, based upon the totality of the information in front of us, WECC determined that pursuing a software development path was the path that would be in the best, long-term interest of the WREGIS program, its customers, users, and the state and provincial programs it serves.
WECC is a non-profit funded through assessments to load-serving entities in the Western Interconnection. WECC has no financial interest in WREGIS beyond ensuring that it has sufficient revenue and reserves to operate, and no financial incentive to develop a competitor to the other renewable energy registries currently operating in North America. Our sole interest has been, and will continue to be, listening to WREGIS’s users, program sponsors, and other stakeholders as we determine the best possible path forward for WREGIS.
We are aware that CleanCounts conducted a presentation via Zoom on August 25, 2025, in which it pitched the idea of CleanCounts taking over the WREGIS program. We will address this through the committees and other communications channels that already exist within WREGIS and its community of stakeholders, including the WREGIS Committee and the WREGIS SAC, as well as other appropriate forums.
