About Risk Management

The WECC Risk Management Program (RMP) is developed to collaboratively address both established and emerging reliability and security risks impacting the Western Interconnection. By actively engaging stakeholders, we work together to identify, prioritize, monitor, and mitigate risks, ultimately enhancing the overall reliability and security of the West’s Bulk Power System (BPS).

Key Features of the Risk Management Approach:
  • Industry Standard Framework: WECC’s process is rooted in the ISO 31000 Risk Management Process, ensuring adherence to industry-recognized best practices.
  • Customized for WECC: The ISO 31000 framework has been tailored to meet the unique operational environment and objectives of WECC, reflecting the specific needs of our stakeholders.
  • Core Steps for Managing Risks: The RMP includes five essential steps that guide WECC in managing individual risks effectively.
An Adaptive Framework:
  • Creates a Structured Approach: It enables WECC to prioritize initiatives for addressing risks and track the effectiveness of the industry’s actions.
  • Encourages Collaboration: By leveraging existing efforts and working closely with other organizations and industry experts, we avoid redundancy and build on successful strategies.
  • Promotes Continuous Improvement: Our feedback mechanisms allow for necessary adjustments in prioritization, mitigation efforts, and overall program enhancements based on collective insights.
